What Is an NPN Number?
July 24, 2026 · 4 min read · By UplineReview
The National Producer Number (NPN) is the single identifier assigned to every licensed insurance producer in the United States by the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Unlike state license numbers, which vary by state and can change, your NPN follows you for your entire career — across every state, carrier, and line of authority.
NPN vs license number
Your state license number is issued by each state's Department of Insurance and applies only there. If you are licensed in ten states, you have ten license numbers — but exactly one NPN. Carriers, FMOs, and compliance systems use the NPN because it is the only identifier that works nationally, which is why nearly every contracting packet asks for it.
How to look up an NPN
NIPR offers a free public lookup at nipr.com: search by name and state, or by license number. Your NPN also appears on carrier contracting paperwork and in your state producer license record. Agencies and FMOs have their own entity NPNs, which you can use to verify an upline is who it claims to be before contracting.
Why UplineReview verifies NPNs
Anonymous review sites fill up with fake reviews — from uplines promoting themselves and from competitors attacking each other. Every reviewer on UplineReview verifies their NPN against NIPR data before posting, so the ratings in the FMO directory come from real licensed agents. Read more about our verification process in how it works, and if you are newly licensed, start with what an FMO is and how to pick your first upline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my NPN number?
+
Use the free NIPR NPN lookup at nipr.com — search by your name, state, and license number. Your NPN also appears on most carrier contracting paperwork and in your state's producer license record.
Is my NPN the same as my license number?
+
No. State license numbers are issued per state and can change; your NPN is a single national identifier that stays with you for your entire career across all states and lines of authority.
Do agencies have NPNs too?
+
Yes. Business entities (agencies, FMOs) receive their own NPNs, which is one way to identify and verify an upline during contracting.
